AltaSteel: Turning Recycled Steel into Regional Strength

At AltaSteel, recycling isn’t just part of the process—it’s the driving force behind everything the company does.

Since 1955, AltaSteel has been transforming scrap steel into high-quality products that support critical infrastructure across Western Canada. As one of Alberta’s largest recyclers and a cornerstone of the Edmonton region’s industrial economy, the company combines innovation, sustainability, and manufacturing excellence to deliver real impact.

AltaSteel is a leading producer of reinforcing bar (rebar), a vital component in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other essential infrastructure. AltaSteel also produces engineered round and square bars, flat bar, and grinding rod products that support the mining, construction, structural, agricultural, and oil & gas industries. Known for its strength, reliability, and consistent quality, AltaSteel’s products plays a key role in shaping the region’s growth and development.

Every day, AltaSteel gives new purpose to materials that would otherwise go to waste. Using advanced electric arc furnace technology, recycled steel is melted at temperatures exceeding 1,650°C and transformed into new products in a matter of hours. With the capacity to produce up to 500,000 tonnes of steel billets annually, AltaSteel plays a critical role in supporting a circular economy while reducing environmental impact.

This commitment extends beyond operations. By working closely with automotive recyclers and suppliers, AltaSteel ensures that end-of-life materials—from vehicles to industrial scrap—are responsibly processed and reintegrated into the manufacturing cycle.

As a proud member of the Strathcona Industrial Association (SIA), AltaSteel is part of a collective effort to lead with purpose. Together with fellow members, the company is advancing environmental stewardship, prioritizing safety, and strengthening the communities where they operate.

AltaSteel isn’t just making steel—it’s shaping a more sustainable future for the region and beyond.
